TULANE Basketball (11-1) is the No. 1 team in the country heading into the Big East Tournament in Buffalo.
The Mountaineers are expected to have a huge advantage in terms of recruiting and experience heading into next season’s NCAA Tournament, and the tournament is a major step toward helping the program compete for the national title.TULANE has a lot of talent in the backcourt, with the likes of center Chris Wright, wing Josh Reynolds and guard Dwayne Bacon already in the program.
But head coach Dave Rice has already built an excellent program, and he is not going to give up any ground.
He is the most successful coach in NCAA history, and it is clear he has the necessary talent to win at the highest level.
The Big East is where Rice will look to build his program, but the program’s top two players could easily lead the charge in his quest to win a national title next season.
Tulane currently has nine players on its roster who are ranked in the Top 200 in the nation, including nine in the ESPN 100.
The list of Top 20 players includes six in the class of 2019.
The Tigers are led by wing Josh Payne, who is ranked in ESPN’s top 100, along with Payne’s brother, Isaiah Payne, and forward Chris Wright.
Tulsa has also got an incredible talent pool on the defensive end, with six players ranked in AP Top 200.
The frontcourt duo of point guard Tyler Davis and forward Aaron Harrison have combined for 8.6 points per game, while the 6-foot-7 Harrison leads the Tigers in rebounds (2.4 per game) and blocks (2).
The Tigers also have the ability to run the floor at times, as senior forward Josh Jones is ranked No. 9 in the league in 3-point shooting and is one of the top players in the conference in assists (6.3 per game).
Jones has been a part of the Big 12 Conference tournament team for the past two years, and his play on both ends of the floor could make him a factor for the Tigers this season.
The other key for Rice is his recruiting, which is led by former Tulsa head coach Josh Jackson, who was a head coach at Texas Tech.
Jackson led the Red Raiders to an NCAA Tournament berth last season and will help Rice build a program that can compete for a national championship next season, and that will be a great recruiting ground for the program as well.
The Big East tournament starts Friday and will feature the top eight teams in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
There will be three games against conference opponents.
TULA and Cincinnati will meet in the Sweet 16, while Temple, North Carolina and Maryland will face off in the Elite Eight.
