This will be Drexels basketball’s third visit to the NCAA Tournament in six years, but the 6-foot-7 senior point guard isn’t taking any chances.
“The way that we play, we play like that every night, but that doesn’t mean that’s what we are going to do every night,” he said.
“We can play a lot of different ways, and you never know what is going to come our way.
But it’s still something we are looking to do.”
The Drexes (27-15) have not made the NCAA tournament since 2009, and they haven’t won in more than two years.
But they’re coming off a big win over Purdue on Monday night in which Drexlers standout guard Malik Reynolds was named the Big Ten Player of the Week.
Drexel will be facing the Spartans (18-10) on March 6 in the first round of the NCAA tourney.
It’s the first time since 2005 that the teams meet since the teams met in the NCAA’s tournament in 2011.
Dylan O’Neill leads Drexell with 24 points on 11-of-20 shooting, but senior guard Josh Hogue scored 19 points.
Freshman D.J. Chappelle Jr. and freshman Jordan Evans also had double-doubles, each hitting three-pointers.
Evans had 14 points on 5-of 10 shooting in the win over the Boilermakers.
Freshmen Nicky Guillen and Dylan O’Brien had 18 points apiece.
Drexler’s leading scorer, freshman guard Matt Wiltjer, has played in just two games this season, but he’s averaging 16.9 points and 7.3 assists.
The Dukes’ other tournament wins are a pair of victories over Louisville and an 83-61 victory over Illinois.
The Blue Devils are coming off their first win over an ACC opponent since Jan. 27.
Duke head coach Dave Rice has been the last coach to win a Big Ten tournament game against an FBS opponent, a 79-66 victory over Northwestern in 2013.
Rivalry games are always exciting, but Drexeleans coach was a big part of that in 2011-12.
Rice is looking for his first NCAA tournament win.
He won his first nine games against Drexelle, but they never made it to the Elite Eight.
The team finished 7-5 and missed the tournament after falling in the quarterfinals to Michigan.
In 2018, Rice had a perfect record against D.U.O. He is looking to make it five straight wins against the Blue Devils, which would tie his career-high of five straight against Dutchess.
